An industry I'm GLAD the government regulates
On Saturday I learned that a woman I know casually is an international arms dealer. Of course as soon as I heard this, flashes of every spy thriller movie I've ever seen - and that's probably in the hundreds - went racing through my head. Then I realized if she was the kind of arms dealer that sells Uzis and other weapons to our enemies she wouldn't exactly volunteer information about her profession, so I pulled it together to ask a few questions. Here's the scoop:
1. She heads up design, production and marketing of an air-to-ship missile.
2. All sales have to go through the U.S. government for obvious security reasons.
3. Few of this particular missile are sold...they're so costly they're used only to take out aircraft carriers and other large ships.
4. Trade shows are in the marketing mix. Can you imagine walking through that venue? No smoking, please!
Of course the marketer in me is screaming to learn more about how that part of the business is run. There are so many regulations in marketing pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and spirits...I can't even begin to imagine the restrictions put on large scale weapons!
